A Vocation to Love
The Most Reverend Salvatore J. Cordileone
Archbishop of San Francisco
God has designed each of us to be conceived within the holy union of marriage between a man and a woman. Living your God-given call to marriage with faithfulness is the best gift you can give to your children and to the culture at large, since we develop our full human potential within the loving community of a family. It is there that we learn to love, to be in community with others, and it is there that we first learn our Faith.
Married Christian couples are called to be apostles of divine love made visible and tangible in our everyday world. In providing a living image of fidelity and fruitful love and by modeling the love of Jesus for his Church, sacramental marriages are essential to building a civilization based on truth and love. This sacrament, where “the two become one,” has the power to transform not only your lives but the lives of all those around you. No solution to society’s many problems will have a lasting effect unless we rebuild a culture of marriage and family.
Your Love Story will inform, encourage, and support you—as individuals and as married or engaged couples—to become living witnesses to the power of marriage that is faithful, permanent, and open to the gift of life. It draws together the ordinary and the extraordinary, the sacred and the secular, the sacrifices and the transcendent joys of marriage. Priests and deacons will find in it engaging ways to share the Church’s teaching on love, sexuality, and marriage. Engaged and married couples will be intrigued, informed, and challenged.
We know that marriage is God’s “original gift” to humanity, and when lived as He designed it, it is truly a taste of heaven. As you prepare yourself to stand before God on your wedding day and administer to each other the Sacrament of Marriage . . . and when you are being tried in the fi res of everyday married life … remember the call of your vocation, to create this great civilization of truth and love, beginning in your own home and expanding to encompass those around you.
As you accept the honor bestowed upon you through God’s call to this vocation of marriage, I pray you will receive the wisdom and the strength to live out the foundational truths of marriage and family, always proclaiming them with love and compassion. Let us call upon our God for the grace to go forth and do this together.
In fraternal union with your bishops, I offer you my love, affirmation, and support as you write your own love story based on the ultimate story of love—the story of our God, who is love.
