- CCL founded
In Humanae Vitae, Pope Paul VI’s 1968 encyclical, the Holy Father wrote about the need for married couples to become apostles to other married couples: “…it is married couples themselves who become apostles and guides to other married couples. This is assuredly, among so many forms of apostolate, one of those which seem most opportune today.” – Humanae Vitae, 26
The CCL founders felt strongly called to address this prophetic statement from Pope Paul VI by providing the practical help of Natural Family Planning. They created an apostolate based on a “couple to couple” approach — married couples volunteering to teach NFP to other married couples. Thus, the Couple to Couple League (CCL) was founded.
CCL initially taught a method of NFP that was developed in consultation with Dr. Konald A. Prem, an Ob-Gyn and Professor at the University of Minnesota. The method used temperature observations, mucus observations and cervical observations to form a comprehensive system that cross-checked all the proven indicators of pre- and postovulation infertility. As the science has evolved, CCL has continued to update and incorporate the best medical evidence into the method.
The timeline that follows gives a synopsis of some of the highlights of CCL’s history since 1971.
