It Starts in the Heart

When couples first encounter Natural Family Planning, many share the same reaction: Why didn’t we know this sooner? Author and speaker Megan Madden,  a popular interview on the PeakDay Podcast, understands that question well. A wife, mother of seven, and author of Mary, Teach Me to Be Your Daughter and Through Storms and Still Waters with Ascension Press, Megan has seen firsthand how learning to live with an awareness of natural fertility does far more than regulate family size. It forms hearts. It shapes minds and strengthens families. And quietly, almost imperceptibly, it builds a pro-life culture from within marriage itself. NFP is about formation.

“It really all begins with the woman,” Megan explains. “When we understand that we are made with a particular, natural, God-given design that structures the beauty of the body and our potential for motherhood, we can then approach our own dignity.” That dignity becomes visible in the most intimate moments of marriage, both in times of coming together and in times of abstinence. Living in rhythm with fertility cultivates attentiveness and fosters reverence. It makes a couple continually aware of the miracle of life and the sacred reality that each child is “knit together in the womb.”

In a culture that often treats fertility as a malfunction to suppress, Natural Family Planning restores wonder. It invites couples to see the body not as a problem to manage, but as a gift to understand. And that shift quietly transforms how they see children.

From Avoidance to Openness

Megan recalls learning NFP during engagement as part of marriage preparation. At the time, the emphasis felt largely focused on avoiding pregnancy, a reflection, she believes, of the broader culture where contraception is assumed even within Christian marriages.

Yet something unexpected happened. “I remember learning about my body, being grateful for that knowledge,” she says. “And then having the fruit of that knowledge ignite in me a deep desire for radical openness to life.”

Later, when serious circumstances required postponing pregnancy, Megan was deeply grateful for NFP. It provided a way to respect God’s design without obstructing the unitive dimension of marriage. It never suppressed fertility and it never treated the possibility of life as an enemy. Instead, it allowed space for discernment without violating the integrity of the marital act.

That integrity proved especially meaningful when Megan encountered health complications following multiple C-sections. By understanding her cycle and working with a pro-life physician, she was able to safeguard her health and eventually welcome more children. Here, NFP revealed another often-overlooked truth: awareness of fertility is about honoring the female body and protecting women’s health in ways that align with the gift of life rather than undermine it.

The Quiet Formation of a Pro-Life Heart

Many describe Natural Family Planning as one of the most quietly pro-life practices in the Church. Megan agrees, but with an important nuance. While knowledge of fertility is powerful, information alone does not convert hearts. “The great lack of knowledge in this area doesn’t surprise me,” she reflects. Modern society has distanced us from our bodies, often assuming technology or medicine will solve every problem. At the same time, the generational passing down of feminine wisdom has eroded in cultures increasingly hostile to motherhood.

But what ultimately changes a couple’s outlook is deeper than biology. “People are going to end up embracing NFP and rejecting artificial birth control,” she says, “when we begin to understand our own worth and when we embrace the message of the Gospel that we are called to radical love and radical selflessness in a life lived in service to others.”

That is what is truly at stake. If couples see themselves as autonomous individuals seeking convenience, children may appear as interruptions. But if they understand marriage as a vocation of self-gift, openness to life becomes a natural expression of love.

Natural Family Planning forms this vision slowly, patiently, Megan says. It teaches spouses to communicate regularly about serious discernment. It requires periodic sacrifice, builds trust, fosters gratitude for the times of union, and deepens appreciation during seasons of waiting. “I am filled with gratitude to have this option,” she says, “knowing that it never inhibits the potential of life or artificially obstructs the union between spouses.” Over time, this rhythm shapes the entire family culture. Children grow up seeing that their existence was not an accident nor a burden, but something received with intention and prayer.

A Secret Worth Sharing

Why, then, does NFP remain such a well-kept secret? Megan feels it is partly because modern culture has embraced hormonal birth control and partly because natural fertility awareness was once passed organically from mother to daughter, and that chain has weakened.

Yet when couples encounter it fully, when they understand the dignity of their bodies and the sacredness of their union, they often discover something surprising: NFP is about formation.

  • It forms women to recognize their God-given design.
  • It forms men to reverence the mystery of fertility rather than control it.
  • It forms marriages rooted in communication and mutual sacrifice.
  • It forms families open to life.

And in doing so, it forms a culture where the pro-life conviction is cultivated from within the heart of marriage itself. For Megan and her husband, “Implementing the reality of NFP in our marital relationship makes us continually aware of, and attentive to, the miracle of life.”

If Natural Family Planning is a secret, it is one that deserves to be told boldly. Proclaimed as an invitation to live marriage in a way that reflects the creative love of God – faithful, fruitful, and free.
