Mary: A Crown of Flowers, A Life of Faith

In the heart of spring, the Catholic Church turns its gaze to Mary, honoring her as the Queen of May. Blossoms, light, and new life seem to echo her quiet “yes”—a response that allowed grace to enter the world in a profound way. For generations, May Crownings have offered a simple but powerful image: placing a crown of flowers upon Mary’s head as a sign of love, trust, and reverence. This tradition reflects a way of living that speaks directly to the vocation of marriage.
Faith
Mary’s Queenship does not come from earthly power but from her complete cooperation with God’s plan. She received what was given, entrusted herself fully, and remained faithful through joy and suffering alike. Couples who practice Natural Family Planning live out a similar posture. They are invited to receive rather than control, to discern rather than dictate, and to remain open to life and love as gifts. This way of living requires trust in each other and in God’s design.
When couples choose to live according to God’s plan for marriage, they are, in a sense, imitating Mary in their daily lives. Each act of generosity, each moment of patience, each decision made with reverence for life becomes a quiet offering. Like placing flowers at her feet, these choices honor her example and draw couples deeper into the same grace she received.
Mary’s Maternal Care
The Catechism reminds us in CCC 969 that Mary continues her role in salvation history: her maternal care for us “continues uninterruptedly,” and through her intercession we can receive the gifts of discernment and prudence. This means couples are not left to navigate their vocation alone. Mary’s presence is active, attentive, and deeply personal. She accompanies, strengthens, and intercedes.
“This motherhood of Mary in the order of grace continues uninterruptedly from the consent which she loyally gave at the Annunciation and which she sustained without wavering beneath the cross, until the eternal fulfilment of all the elect. Taken up to heaven she did not lay aside this saving office but by her manifold intercession continues to bring us the gifts of eternal salvation ….” CCC 969
In the rhythm of married life, there are seasons of understanding and seasons of uncertainty. Turning to Mary in those moments invites a different kind of peace. She understands what it means to trust without fully seeing the path ahead. She shows that surrender is not passive but courageous and fruitful.
As we honor Mary this May, her crown becomes more than a tradition. It becomes an invitation. Couples can look to her as both Mother and Queen, asking for her intercession and following her example of faithful love. In doing so, they discover that the grace sustaining their marriage is the same grace that shaped her “yes”.
“If you are in danger, if your hearts are confused, turn to Mary; she is our comfort, our help; turn towards her and you will be saved.”
-St. Frances Xavier Cabrini
