Theology of the Body: A Vision of Love & Marriage

When people first encounter Natural Family Planning, they often assume it is primarily about charts, cycles, or methods. But at its heart NFP is rooted in something much deeper: a vision of the human person, marriage, and love that the Church calls Theology of the Body.

Theology of the Body (often abbreviated TOB) is not a method or a program. It is a way of seeing ourselves and one another through God’s eyes. Developed by Pope St. John Paul II during his Wednesday audiences over the course of several years, Theology of the Body helps us understand why the Church teaches what she does about marriage, sexuality, and the gift of life.

As Pope St. John Paul II taught,

“The body, and it alone, is capable of making visible what is invisible: the spiritual and the divine.” (1)

In other words, our bodies are not accidental or insignificant. They reveal something essential about who we are and who God is.

What Is Theology of the Body?

At its core, Theology of the Body teaches that the human person is a unity of body and soul, created in the image and likeness of God. Our bodies express the mystery of the human person and communicate real, self-giving love.

In marriage, this truth becomes especially visible. The marital embrace is not merely biological or functional; it is a total gift of self – physical, emotional, and spiritual. When husband and wife give themselves to one another in this way, their love reflects God’s own love: faithful, permanent, and life-giving.

This is where Theology of the Body and Natural Family Planning meet.

Theology of the Body and Natural Family Planning

Natural Family Planning flows directly from the Church’s understanding of the body and love. NFP respects the way God designed the human body and honors both meanings of the marital act: unitive and procreative. Rather than altering or suppressing fertility, NFP invites couples to understand and cooperate with it.

Through prayerful discernment, couples learn to make responsible decisions about growing their family while remaining open to God’s will. In this way, NFP becomes a practice AND a way of living out authentic love in marriage. A love that reflects God’s design rather than reshaping it.

Humanae Vitae and the Birth of CCL

This vision was presented in 1968 when Pope Paul VI issued his encyclical Humanae Vitae, which upheld the inseparable connection between love and life within marriage. While often misunderstood, Humanae Vitae also contained a powerful call to married couples themselves.

Pope Paul VI wrote:

Thus it comes about that in the fullness of the lay vocation will be included a novel and outstanding form of the apostolate by which, like ministering to like, married couples themselves by the leadership they offer will become apostles to other married couples. (2)

It was in response to this call that Couple to Couple League (CCL) was founded. From the beginning, CCL has invited couples to learn Natural Family Planning and walk alongside other couples, sharing both the science and the lived experience of this teaching.

CCL’s mission has always been rooted in this conviction: married couples are uniquely equipped to evangelize other married couples.

Couples Evangelizing Couples

Theology of the Body helps explain why this approach is so powerful. Love is learned through witness. When couples share how living God’s design has strengthened their marriage, deepened trust, and fostered generosity toward life, they offer something no textbook alone can provide.

Through teaching, mentoring, and community, couples working with CCL participate in a mission larger than themselves. They are helping others discover the freedom and joy that come from living the truth about love.

An Invitation

Theology of the Body is not reserved for theologians. It is meant for ordinary men and women living marriage day by day. Through Natural Family Planning, couples are invited to live this vision in a concrete, practical way: trusting God, respecting the body, and growing in love.

And as CCL has believed from the very beginning, this vision of love and marriage is meant to be shared—couple to couple.
