NFP and Changing Hearts

Is NFP transformational for relationships? Is it an entry point to Catholicism? While I don’t know if NFP creates more Catholics, the evidence in the literature does support the idea that NFP helps couples to communicate better. They have improved spirituality, are better at self-control, and attribute NFP to a better relationship with their spouse. Several large studies demonstrate that those who have ever used NFP are significantly less likely to divorce compared to those who have ever used contraception. This clearly implies NFP is more than just a way of spacing babies.
The Seasons
So what might NFP be doing that is so beneficial? I think it comes down to some simple ideas. First, it puts us in touch with the normal ‘seasons’ of our body. For women, (married or not) understanding that it’s normal to feel different today than yesterday and tomorrow is a powerfully edifying insight. As for men, acknowledging we are different and recognizing our desires don’t always align with the seasons creates the opportunity to demonstrate respect. For both men and women knowing how our bodies function to be able to co-create life may be as powerful as learning to read. The popularity of cycle tracking apps among young women points to this deep-seated desire to understand how our bodies work.
The Body
Second, and perhaps more importantly, using NFP in marriage helps feed the body. It feeds the body by helping us pay attention to and live with (sometimes easily, sometimes not so much) the normal healthy pattern of fertility and infertility. Simply put, it’s living with, rather than in opposition to, our very nature.
The Spirit
NFP feeds the spirit by elevating the physical dimension. Using it helps us recognize and respond to the better angels within us. Surveys of NFP users compared to those using contraception demonstrate that they have improved spirituality. They are also more likely to view themselves as co-creators with God. Many couples who used contraception and then tried NFP report increased intimacy. Also reported was improved sexuality and a deeper meaning in sexual relations.
Bottom line, NFP is a habit and practice that helps us to live as we were created to live. That certainly doesn’t sound transformational but in the context of today’s contemporary culture it’s radically elevating.
