It’s the most wonderful time of the year!
And no, to those of you for whom the classic Andy Williams Christmas tune popped into your head, I am not talking about Christmas. It’s Summer Olympics time!! If you are anything like me, you are absolutely loving the chance to watch some of the greatest athletes from all around compete on the world’s largest stage.
As I grab the popcorn and turn on the TV to watch these games for the next two weeks, I can’t help but be completely awestruck and inspired by the athletes who are participating. They are using every single ounce of energy and amount of strength that they have to go for the gold. Truly they are using the incredible gifts that God has given them to their fullest potential and, in turn, hopefully inspiring the millions of us watching to do the same.
One way that we can be inspired by these performances in the next two weeks is to think where in our own lives we can step up our game. May we suggest you consider your marriage?
Marriage can easily be compared to a marathon or an Olympic competition, where the gold medal is having a healthy, happy and long #JoyfulMarriage with our spouse and with Christ at the center. And just like there are times of difficulty in training for any sport, there certainly is in marriage as well. But I guarantee that if we were to ask Michael Phelps or any other Olympic champion if the pain and hard times were well worth it given the end results, we would always get a yes. Nothing worth having ever comes easy, and the same goes for our marriages. Creating a long lasting #JoyfulMarriage isn’t something that comes easy, but instead is something that we have to work at each and every day, just like these athletes do.
How does NFP help us go for the gold in marriage? NFP involves natural, healthy bodies and spirits fully giving themselves to one another without holding anything back by using contraception. It involves learning to communicate more and gain mutual respect. It involves respecting our bodies and using them as they were created. These athletes keep their bodies pure for their sports, and NFP also keeps our bodies pure. By allowing a man to be a man and a woman to be a woman, NFP allows us to love each other as God intended.
So this Olympics, let’s take the inspiration that these athletes provide and feed it into every aspect of our lives, especially our marriages. And in this way, we can all become Olympians in Christ.
