On February 5, 2016, rising country artists Dan + Shay released their second album, and what caught my ear is one of its singles, the tear jerking and moving love ballad From the Ground Up. In the song, Dan + Shay tell the story of a young couple who want to model their relationship after their grandparents’ marriage of 65 plus years and build their love from the ground up.
What makes this song stand out to me is that it is totally different from anything else we hear in the world today. When we turn on the radio almost everything we hear has to do with sex, drugs and alcohol. Rarely do we hear songs that focus on more positive and uplifting topics, never mind a marriage that has lasted 65 years. Dan + Shay, however, refreshingly decided to change this. From the Ground Up focuses on a “kind of love you don’t see as much now,” says lead vocalist Shay Mooney. With U.S. divorce rates at an all time high, Dan + Shay wanted to write a “true love song and set that example we saw from our grandparents.” After being the inspiration for this song, both artists’ grandfathers recently passed away.
Wow. Talk about long #JoyfulMarriages. Dan + Shay continue on to say that this kind of love lived out by both of their grandparents, is one that they aim for in their own personal lives as well. Once again, wow. With the hook-up culture being so prevalent in the lives of young people today, how incredibly uplifting it is to see these two artists striving for a love that will last all their lives.
So, cheers to you Dan + Shay, for going against the norm of today’s society and writing a song that values the importance of a long #JoyfulMarriage.
