Contrary to popular belief, Natural Family Planning is highly effective — it has a 99% method effectiveness in preventing pregnacy. Often, NFP is mistakenly compared to the Rhythm Method, popular in the 1960s, which relied on a statistically “average” cycle of 28 days. Much has been learned about the fertility cycle since then, and today’s NFP is extremely reliable because it relies on a woman’s day-to-day observations of her fertility signs. No longer do women have to “guess” what days of the month they are fertile. With modern NFP, decisions are based on actual, current fertility signs.
