Building Healthy Marriages through Natural Family Planning

After the birth of our third child, we experienced a change in my cycles that resulted in abstinence, abstinence, and more abstinence. We can certainly relate to your sense of frustration! We wanted to continue using NFP, but we knew there had to be a better way;  surely my body was not fertile "all the time!"

We had learned NFP through the CCL Home Study Course, so we did not have a relationship with a local Teaching Couple. We knew we could contact the CCL office for a referral, but at that same time, we attended a local seminar for NFP, and learned of three other methods of NFP taught in our diocese, in addition to the CCL method. We expressed our frustrations, and one couple — the husband, a physician — shared a similar history. The CCL method had worked very well for them in the early years of their marriage. Then, several children and normal aging resulted in cycle changes and much abstinence. They went on to learn two different NFP methods and found one that worked better for them. We did the same.

We truly believe NFP can be a source of healing for both of you, even in spite of your current frustrations.  Consider contacting your diocese to explore other methods taught in your area, or work with a local CCL instructor to clarify some of your concerns. There are many options for NFP;  each one has a slighly different focus in observing or interpreting a woman's cycle, but all are effective and all are in accord with Church teaching. God's will sometimes includes crosses to bear, but also tremendous grace and joy. May God bless you and guide you both in your love for one another.
