I am sorry that this man has gone through such difficulties with the use of NFP. My wife and I had the blessing of learning NFP while we were engaged and it has served as a basic support for our marriage. Although I admit that I only took the class because it was the teaching of the Church, I count this as divine providence.

For me, sexual self-control presented a huge challenge and change of mindset from my college years. Since I had handed over my life to Christ in college, I decided that following His teaching in the Church could be no worse than what I had done with my life up to that point and might get me into Heaven as well. I was surprised to discover that His teaching was so scientific and appealed to my reason, not just blind faith. As an engineer, I resolved to use all of my rational and scientific faculties to be the best NFPer that I could be. I take my wife's temperature every morning when I get up, with the goal of not waking her up at all. I ask about and record mucus every night. As I tell everyone who asks (and some who don't), if you can talk about mucus, you can talk about anything.

I also have true sympathy for the delay of the honeymoon night. Because of the stress of the wedding and honeymoon leading to erratic cycles, my wife and I waited two months to consummate our marriage. I was able to practice this new found self-control and offer it up for a better marriage and for reparation of past sins. The only reason we were free to make this choice was the liberation found in the NFP lifestyle.
