Workshop Talks from the CCL Convention 2010

Breastfeeding and Parent-Infant Co-Sleeping: Humankind’s Oldest and Most Successful Sleep and Feeding Arrangement
James McKenna, Ph.D.

This workshop explores the complimentarity of the biological and cultural as well as psychological roles each member in the marriage dyad plays to maximize the chances that their children will receive the most optimal early human experience of all — ingesting “liquid gold,” i.e., its mother’s breastmilk and experiencing the behavioral system that delivers it. We will consider the cultural constraints placed on both males and females in western cultures as regards certain ancient infant care practices, that are not easily extinguished. We will examine the contributions males have traditionally played throughout history in supporting breastfeeding women and why it seems to be true that, when it comes down to it, the story of human evolution begins and ends with who the babies are and what our babies need, and how we are best able to meet those needs.

God in Every Occupation Means Purpose for Every Job-Even Yours
Tom Bengtson

We will look at the purpose of work (it’s not what you think), and consider ways to live our faith on the job. We’ll see what advice scripture offers for living our faith at work, and we’ll look at ways to balance the demands of work and family.

How We Will Win the War for Life
Michael Schwartz

We can no longer think and act as we did in 1975. The world has changed and so must we, to fight and defend the cause for life.

DISCLAIMER: As part of this presentation, there is a statement that “morning after” pills do not act as abortifacients. While there may be differing opinions on this issue, The Couple to Couple League’s position is that there is sufficient medical evidence to state that emergency contraceptives, like morning after pills, do have abortifacients properties. Manufacturer labeling of emergency contraceptives state that implantation may be inhibited by altering the endometrium.

A Healthy, Happy and Confident Pregnancy: Nutrition Before, During and After Your Pregnancy
Marilyn Shannon

A new and growing body of research shows that the food you eat and the vitamins you take around the time of conception can significantly reduce the risk of many different types of birth defects, as well as the risk of miscarriage. During pregnancy, attention to the amount of food you eat and its proportions — protein, fats, and carbohydrates — can help you carry your baby to term, even if you have had trouble doing so in the past. Fish oil? Flax oil? What they can do for your baby’s brain, if you take them while pregnant and while breastfeeding. An encouraging look at what all of us are trying to do well as we build our families.

Theology of the Body, Plain and Simple
Deacon Bill Turrentine

Theology of the Body is about our vocation to love and about the way in which that vocation is inscribed in our bodies as well as our souls. This workshop will follow Pope John Paul II as he, in turn, follows Jesus, starting with a dispute with the Pharisees over divorce and going all the way back to the Beginning, when God created us human beings in His own image and likeness; male and female He made us. We will explore John Paul II’s understanding of the relation between the two different stories of the creation of Adam and Eve in the book of Genesis. We will also read about the tragic consequences of the Fall, when Adam tells God, “I heard you in the garden; but I was afraid, because I was naked, so I hid myself.” We will end with the famous passage from the fifth chapter of St. Paul’s Letter to the Ephesians, were Paul compares the self-giving of husband and wife with the self-giving of Christ and His Bride, the Church. In the midst of this grand tour, John Paul II will shed light on the nature of our vocation to love, on the importance of the doctrine of the Trinity in our lives, on the meaning of human sexuality and marriage, on the miracle of children and on celibacy as a sacrifice in witness to the beauty of the marriage of Christ and His Bride, the Church. You should emerge from this workshop with a smile on your face and a better understanding of who you are and of what God has called you to do. (If possible, bring your Bible with you.)

What are the New Fertility/Nutrition Research Means to CCL Teachers and NFP Users
Marilyn Shannon

Since 2000 there has been a veritable explosion of published research on the link between “fertility, cycles and nutrition,” a topic that has been of interest to CCL since 1990. Marilyn Shannon, author of Fertility, Cycles & Nutrition, will highlight some of the most useful topics — including new research on fish oil for menstrual pain, on pycnogenol for endometriosis, on chasteberry for PMS and infertililty, on vitamin C for short luteal phase and infertility, on weight loss and exercise for PCOS, on the effects of trans-saturated fats, soda pop, and milk on general fertility, on the surprising link between excess exercise and short luteal phase, and on unsuspected celiac disease as a cause of cycle irregularity and infertility.

Marilyn Shannon, from Fort Wayne, Ind., has been maried to Ron for 31 years. They are the parents of nine, Marilyn is a part time tenured instructor of biology at Indiana University Purdue University Fort Wayne. Ron and she have been a CCL Teaching Couple since 1982. Marilyn is the author of Fertility, Cycles & Nutrition, first published in 1990 and currently being updated and expanded into a fourth edition.

A Sneak Peek at the New Fertility, Cycles & Nutrition
Marilyn Shannon

The new edition is due to be published by CCL by the end of this year. What’s new in it? In short, it is a complete and comprehensive rewrite. This workshop will first introduce you to the new “Twelve Rules for Better Nutrition,” which are similar to the old ones but which contain many more examples, options, and lists. “Acquiring and Preparing Nutritious Food” now includes alternatives to unhealthy non-stick cookware, introduction of “community-supported agriculture” as a source of good food, and even a new cookbook. “Basic Supplements to Consider” now recommends more folic acid and vitamin B12 for older mothers hoping to conceive, and recommends fish oil as an alternative or an addition to flax oil for the wonderfully fertility-friendly “omega-3 fatty acids.” The second part of the book, “Overcoming Cycle Irregularities and Infertility,” is expanded to reflect new nutritional research for general fertility, as well as for specific problems such as PCOS, short luteal phase, underweight, cycle irregularity and infertility of unknown cause. It includes short reviews of a number of excellent new books as further resources. While much of the new Fertility, Cycles & Nutrition reports on research from scientific journals, the book speaks directly to “you,” and makes use of analogies to simplify the understanding of some complex topics. The “80-20 Rule” is still integral to the approach, so that busy homemakers will continue to find the book’s recommendations practical, useful, and easy to implement.

Marilyn Shannon, from Fort Wayne, Indiana, has been married to Ron for 31 years. They are the parents of nine, Marilyn is a part time tenured instructor of biology at Indiana University Purdue University Fort Wayne. Ron and she have been a CCL Teaching Couple since 1982. Promoting Breastfeeding, Promoting Guilt (Part 1)
Katherine Dettwlyer

A frank discussion of the problem of health care professionals saying they don’t want to give mothers complete and accurate information about the risks of artificial infant formula because they are worried about making mothers feel guilty about not breastfeeding. Includes examples of how guilt is often used to promote healthy behaviors in health advertising, and seeks to understand who is really being “protected” from feeling guilty in the breastfeeding context. Ends with a discussion of the distinction between guilt and regret, and steps for moving beyond guilt.

Katherine Dettwyler is a biological anthropologist known for her research, writings, and lively presentations on breastfeeding and weaning. She is the author of several books and many academic journal articles. She received a 2007 La Leche League International Award of Recognition for her work.
