Effect on Fertility
Following childbirth, women experience a time of infertility called amenorrhea. The length of this time is affected both by the woman’s physiology and the type of feeding chosen for her baby. Lactating (breastfeeding, milk-producing) mothers normally experience a longer length of amenorrhea than non-lactating (non-breastfeeding, formula feeding) mothers. Among lactating mothers, the length of postpartum infertility varies from woman to woman, and depends on the duration, frequency, and intensity with which she nurses her baby.
